INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
PLANT RELATED INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
You may be working in a Refinery, petrochemical, chemical, gas or any oil and gas related plant. Basic knowledge of your work area is essential. Your knowledge related to a plant are questioned here.
1. What is the difference between a refinery and a petrochemical plant?
Refinery converts
crude oil to different byproducts. Refining of the crude oil is done at a
refinery. The input of a refinery is crude oil. The input is called "feed
stock" or "charge stock".
Petrochemical plant uses the byproducts from refinery and converts to other combination of products and chemicals. The plastic is a product from a petrochemical plant.
A beautiful presentation regarding the general aspect of a refinery can be seen from the website of TOTAL, a major energy player.
2. What is downstream and upstream segment in oil&gas industry?
A petroleum refinery
or refining of crude is the downstream segment of oil&gas sector. Drilling
and exploration is an upstream segment.
Don’t be in the
concept that above ground is upstream and below the ground is down stream, it
is not like that!!!
3. What is meant by hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon is an
organic chemical compound of hydrogen and carbon atoms. Crude oil, petrol,
diesel are all hydrocarbon compounds.
4. What is gasoline?
5. Name some of the products that are obtained from a petroleum refinery?
Petrol, Diesel,
Kerosene, aviation fuel etc. are obtained from refinery.
6. What is green field project and brown field project?
Projects which are
built from scratch are called green field project. A new refinery, a new
airport etc. Brown field projects are those which are upgradations or add-ons
to the existing project. E.g.: Capacity enhancement of a plant by
modifications, De-bottle necking projects etc.
7. Name some utilities in a refinery / petrochemical plant / chemical plant?
Air (instrument air,
plant air) , Water for process and
drinking purpose(cooling water, chilled water, drinking water), steam,
condensate, Nitrogen, boiler feed water are utilities.
8. What is mean by offsite areas in a refinery?
The areas other than
the process unit areas are generally called offsite areas. The offsite areas
contain the flare system, boiler, electrical substation, water treatment units
and the connected piping structure between process unit and offsite facilities.
9. What is mean by battery limit?
Battery limits are
used to establish a boundary to a process unit. It is an imaginary line in a
plot plan drawing to specify the boundaries of a unit. 'Inside battery limit'
and 'outside battery limit' are used for mentioning those items or works inside
and outside the battery limits respectively.
10. What is meant by HPP?
HPP means High Point
of Paving. A plant is paved / filled up / concreted up to HPP.
